What is the Marine Debris Field Kit?
In 2023, on an evening walk at the GBX Terminal in Gowanus Bay, our co-founder Gita Nandan came across the scene below: thousands of pieces of floating trash littering the bay and getting caught in the BlueBlocks floating gardens located at the RETI Center field station. This was the impetus for starting MDFK.
In collaboration with community and project partners, we aim to remove floating marine debris from the New York Harbor, while training and developing future water stewards. Our long term goal is to reach all five boroughs and create a new economic/job pathway for young adults, growing the green-blue economy.
Who we are:
Our team's expertise is in data science and GIS mapping, education, urban planning and environmental systems design. Connected by a passion for restoring our ecosystems and cleaning our urban waterways, we collaborate with local stewards and advocates to proactively clean the harbor for the benefit of people and marine life.
Our website is still a work in progress. For more information, please contact marinedebrisfieldkit@gmail.com
